Oral Pathology & Lesion Diagnosis in Burlington

Not every change inside your mouth is harmless. White patches, persistent sores, unexplained burning, and unusual lumps can all signal conditions that need professional evaluation. At Mount Royal Dental, oral pathology assessment is built into every routine exam — and when something needs a closer look, our in-house oral surgeon can perform a biopsy without sending you elsewhere.

What We Screen For

Dr. Sam Gupta and our clinical team evaluate soft tissue changes at every hygiene and exam appointment. We look for early indicators of oral disease including:

  • Oral cancer screening at every examination
  • White patches (leukoplakia) or red patches (erythroplakia) on the tongue, gums, or inner cheeks
  • Non-healing sores or ulcers lasting more than two weeks
  • Suspicious lumps, thickened tissue, or textured changes
  • Burning mouth syndrome evaluation and management

When a lesion requires further investigation, our CBCT 3D imaging provides detailed diagnostic views of bone and surrounding structures — all captured on-site during the same visit.

When to See a Dentist About Oral Lesions

Many patients wait too long to have oral changes assessed. Contact our office if you notice any of the following:

  • A sore in your mouth that has not healed within 14 days
  • A white or red patch that does not go away
  • Persistent numbness or tingling in the lips, tongue, or gums
  • Difficulty swallowing or a feeling that something is caught in your throat
  • A lump or thickening in your cheek, neck, or under your jaw
  • Chronic burning or pain with no obvious cause

Early detection is the single most important factor in successful treatment of oral disease. A brief evaluation can provide clarity and peace of mind.

How Oral Biopsies Work at Mount Royal Dental

If a lesion looks suspicious, Dr. Robert Barron, our in-house oral and maxillofacial surgeon, performs the biopsy right here at our Burlington office. A small tissue sample is taken under local anaesthesia and sent to an oral pathology laboratory for analysis. Results typically return within one to two weeks.

Because Dr. Barron practises on-site, there is no referral wait, no second office to visit, and no gap in your care. The dentist who screens you and the surgeon who biopsies the tissue work under the same roof — which means faster diagnosis and a coordinated treatment plan from day one.

Burning Mouth Syndrome

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) causes a chronic burning or scalding sensation on the tongue, palate, lips, or throughout the mouth — often without any visible tissue changes. It can be persistent or come and go, and it affects daily comfort, eating, and sleep.

Possible contributing factors include hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, dry mouth, oral infections, nerve damage, and medication side effects. Because BMS overlaps with many conditions, evaluation starts with a thorough clinical exam, medical history review, and targeted testing to rule out underlying causes. Our team works to identify treatable factors and develop a management strategy tailored to your symptoms.

Covered Under the Canadian Dental Care Plan

Mount Royal Dental accepts the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) for both general and specialist services. That means oral pathology exams, diagnostic imaging, and surgical biopsies performed by Dr. Barron may all be covered under your CDCP eligibility. Our front desk team can confirm your coverage before any procedure.
